Athletic Director, Roy Wentworth announced today that Norwich Free Academy welcomes back Courtney Gomez ‘04 as Head Coach of Girls Basketball. Gomez returns to coaching the Wildcats after taking a role as Assistant Coach of Women’s Basketball at Connecticut College.
Gomez has remarkable experience playing and coaching. While at the Academy, she was a 4-year starting point guard under her coaching predecessor, Bill Scarlata. “Courtney will do well with the program. She has the experience, enthusiasm and works well with the kids. She is a perfect fit and will continue to do the great job that she has done with the team in the past,” her former coach and now colleague, Scarlata comments.
Gomes was also a member of the Cross Country team for two years and a four-year Varsity Softball player. In her tenure, NFA Girls Basketball won two state championships following undefeated seasons, four ECC titles, and she was named a member of the CT All-State team twice.
Following graduation, Gomez was a 4-year scholarship student-athlete at the University of Hartford, playing Division 1 basketball. Her college career included more leadership opportunities for Gomez as a captain her senior year combined with three America East Conference Championships and three NCAA Tournament appearances.
“I feel incredibly grateful to Mr. Wentworth and the NFA administration in trusting me to take over a program that has had such a history of success across the state. I feel a tremendous amount of pride for the program and for the school as my experience here as a student-athlete shaped who I am today,” says Gomes. “I am so excited to work with a talented group of young women and feel a strong sense of responsibility to maintain the values and NFA’s tradition of excellence.”
Gomez currently works as a physical therapist for Kindred at Home in Old Saybrook. She holds a Bachelor of Health Science and a Doctorate in Physical Therapy from the University of Hartford.
Athletic Director, Roy Wentworth, states, “We are extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to have Courtney Gomez as our Girls Basketball Coach. Courtney brings with her a wealth of knowledge both as a player and a coach. Working with a coach who has played and coached at the college level is an experience that most high school programs can only dream about.” He continues, “Courtney is well known and respected throughout the state and has developed young talent for many years. The added bonus is that Courtney is returning home to NFA which puts our Girls Basketball program the best possible hands.”
