Playshop Presents: War of the Worlds: Panic Broadcast

NFA's winter drama production of War of the Worlds by Joe Landry premieres 7 p.m., Friday, January 25 and Saturday, January 26. An 80th-anniversary reenactment of the original 1938 War of the Worlds broadcast by Orson Welles, Playshop's performance simulates the original radio broadcast that caused real-life panic when listener mistook the sci-fi story of an alien invasion for an actual news broadcast.

Orson Welles's 1938 radio adaptation was based on the classic science fiction work The War of the Worlds. The play takes place in 1948, ten years later, when the WBFR radio ensemble recreates the colorful events surrounding the infamous evening, including the full original broadcast. Complete with vintage commercials and live sound effects, this radio-play-within-a-radio-play is a thrilling homage to the radio's golden age and timely reminder of the effects of fear upon society.

Playshop presents: War of the Worlds - 7 p.m., Fri., Jan. 25 and Sat., Jan. 26, Slater Auditorium.
